Frequently Asked Questions
WaterWell is highly effective at removing bacteria, parasites, and cysts, but like most particle-based filters, it does not filter out viruses. Our filter uses a 0.1-micron ultrafiltration membrane, ideal for capturing bacteria (typically around 0.5 microns), but viruses are much smaller, often 100 times smaller than bacteria.
If you're travelling to areas where waterborne viruses may be a concern, we recommend using WaterWell with pre-treated water that has been purified by methods such as:
- Boiling
- Chemical disinfection
- UV treatment
- Reverse osmosis
In these cases, WaterWell acts as a secondary filter to remove particulates, improve taste, and enhance safety.
Keep in mind that many virus-targeting methods as mentioned above don't remove dirt or sediment, which WaterWell helps with.
Before you travel, it’s a good idea to:
- Research any virus risks in the regions you’ll be visiting
- Ensure your vaccinations are up to date
- Be aware of cross-contamination risks in both travel and daily use
- Follow the usage and cleaning instructions provided with your bottle and filter

The filters naturally have an auto-shutdown feature. Once you feel it’s getting increasingly difficult to draw water through the filter this indicates the membrane is reaching capacity and it’s time to replace the filter. The filtering capacity is up to 1000 litres of water depending on the water quality and should be changed at least once a year after first use.
Each filter can filter up to 1000 litres of water, equal to over 2000 disposable plastic water bottles. So the travel water bottle with would cost $31 for the first year. Each additional year would only cost $21 a year for the replacement filter. Assuming that an average bottle costs $1, that would cost you around $2000 a year for 1000 litres of water. So by using the WaterWell filter water bottle, you could be saving around $2000 a year!
