How It Works
Our ultrafilters filter up to 1000 litres of water - equal to 2000 plastic water bottles.Learn More
WaterWell’s ultrafiltration technology was originally developed for people living in developing nations and for distribution in humanitarian crises.
Most filter bottles on the market only filter to 0.2 microns. By filtering to 0.1 microns we are able to give you cleaner, safer and healthier drinking water.
The filter has two stages of filtration:
Hollow fiber filter is composed of micro-thin hollow tubules which allow water to enter freely into their pores (0.1 micron) whilst trapping the waterborne pathogens, protozoa, parasites cysts and any other particles on the outside, it’s essentially like a sieve on the microscopic level.
It’s 99.9% effective against bacteria protozoa and cysts (the average size of bacteria is 0.5micron). Minerals are not filtered out so the health benefits of these are retained.
The second stage at the top of the filter uses activated carbon fibre block as a filter medium, helping to improve the taste of the water. The activated carbon significantly reduces the level of chlorine (which is useful if filtering tap water). In addition, other volatile organic compounds and some heavy metals are removed.
Carbon fibre block has a higher specific surface area and allows for water to be in contact with the carbon for a longer period, which leads to a better contaminant removal and produces clear water with a superior taste.
The results for the filtration system within WaterWell has been independently tested against internationally recognized standards by industry specialists in the USA and Europe. They have verified that particles to 0.1 microns can be removed at a rate of 99.9%.
The test results meet EPA standards which are the gold standard for environmental protection around the world.
The agency sets regulatory limits for the amounts of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. These contaminant standards are required by the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA).
WaterWell filters are intended to remove biological particle contamination from water. They will not be able to effectively filter additives such as isotonic powders, rehydration tablets, cordials, juices etc.
While the filter removes 99.9% of parasites and bacteria, it cannot filter dissolved salts such as sea water and urine.
The filter removes 99% of chlorine for up 500 litres of tap water. However, it cannot filter out fluoride.
